Bali Hai Dream House
Haena Vacation Rental, Kauai:  It's hard to imagine a more idyllic setting for a beachfront vacation house. The pristinely beautiful bay of Makua (Tunnels) Beach, with its soft golden sand and warm, clear water, has been called “the perfect meeting of mountain and ocean.” The house is graced with breathtaking views of both. Rising dramatically above the ocean is Kauai's signature peak, Mt. Makana, made famous as Bali Hai in “South Pacific” and also featured in “The Thornbirds.” The setting is magical, the house is a dream. In fact it has become known as the Bali Hai Dream House.

Makua is truly a premier beach on an island of premier beaches. A natural coral barrier reef protects the shore from big surf most of the year; it is a snorkeler's paradise. Divers can explore underwater tunnels and caves formed eons ago by lava tubes. Just around the bend, a favorite windsurfing beach brings flashes of colorful sails gliding and dipping over the water. Beachgoers are sometimes entertained by passing whales and dolphins; monk seals “haul out” and rest on the sand. Sunsets here are dreamy and irresistably photogenic.

Captivating sunsets (and ageless sea turtles) can also be found minutes away, where the road ends at Ke‘e Beach. Here is the gateway to the legendary Na Pali Coast, with its towering cliffs and incomparable hiking trails. Beautiful Limahuli Gardens, a world-renowned National Botanical Garden, offers remnants of early Hawaiian terracing, rare foliage, and a heart-stopping ocean view.

The nearest town is charming and historic Hanalei, a 15-minute drive. Along the way, there are one-lane bridges, enticing beaches, and (if you're lucky) misty waterfalls cascading down green mountainsides.  Whether you're unwinding at the Dream House or exploring the island, enchantment is everywhere.

The interior of the Bali Hai Dream House has dramatic ocean and mountain views, bringing the exquisite tropical location inside.

The house itself is both elegant and warmly welcoming, with a spacious, light-filled ambience...thanks to timberframe construction and open-beam ceilings. Furnished with comfortable couches, pine pieces, tropical rattan and a few Hawaiiana antiques, the Dream House quickly feels like a second home. There’s cozy seating around the large fireplace. An oversized pine trestle table is another favorite gathering place for dining, crossword puzzles or games.

Spectacular beach, mountain and sunset views from the lanai makes it a photographer’s dream. This large deck has a picnic table as well as chaises. It’s the ideal spot for an al fresco breakfast or lunch.

The spacious kitchen can accommodate everything from pancakes on the griddle to elegantly catered dinners. It features two sinks, a SubZero refrigerator/freezer, a Viking range, granite countertops, a charming window seat, and a walk-in pantry.

“I thought it was a mural!”  People are dazzled by photos of the master bedroom, with its picture-perfect view of the beach and Mt. Makana. The room has a king-sized sleigh bed and an antique armoire. There's a walk-in closet, and a private bathroom with granite countertops and a vintage-look free-standing tub. Two more generous bedrooms and baths are upstairs, and another bedroom is at beach level. All have queen beds and ample closet space.

The popular media room has comfortable seating, a bookshelf wall, a wide window seat and a large-screen built-in TV. The house is cooled the Hawaiian way — with soft sea breezes and ceiling fans.

Film and TV stars, musicians, writers and world travelers have raved about their weeks at the Bali Hai Dream House.

Wish you were here?
Maybe it’s the perfect time to make some magical Hawaiian memories of your own.
